How much does a website cost in South Africa?

Short answer: most small business websites in South Africa cost R5 000 to R20 000 from a freelancer or small agency in 2026. Basic template sites can be R1 500 to R5 000. Custom builds and online shops usually start around R20 000 and can pass R60 000.

On top of that you pay for a domain (about R100 to R200 a year for .co.za), sometimes hosting, and sometimes a monthly maintenance fee.

The monthly costs people forget

The build price is only half the story. Before you agree to anything, ask about each of these:

What actually changes the price

Number of pages

A one-page site that answers the main questions (what you do, where, how to contact you, what people say) is enough for most trades, salons, cafés and service businesses. Large multi-page sites cost more to build and to keep up to date.

Custom design versus a template

A design made for your business looks better and converts better, but takes longer. A good designer can build something that looks custom without charging agency prices.

Features

Online payments, product catalogues, booking calendars and member logins add real work. If you only need people to call or WhatsApp you, you don't need them.

Writing and photos

If the designer writes your text and sources photos, expect to pay for that time. Using your own photos and Google reviews keeps the cost down and looks more genuine anyway.

What a small business website needs

Whatever you pay, check the site has these. Most of your customers will see it on a phone.

Questions people ask

Is Wix cheaper than paying a web designer?

Up front, yes. Over a few years, often not: the plan never stops, and you do the design yourself. A once-off site with no monthly fee can work out cheaper by the second year.

Why do some websites cost R50 000 and others R2 500?

Size, custom features and who builds it. An agency with a team and an office has costs to cover. A small business that needs a clear, fast, phone-friendly site usually doesn't need what a R50 000 build includes.

Who should own my domain?

You. If the designer registers it in their name, moving your site later can be difficult. Ask for it in writing.
